Boxing
I enjoy boxing because boxing relieves stress when somebody gets on your nerves. I box so I can get stronger for encountering something you're not going to expect like getting robbed. I like to box A LOT. I also listen to music while boxing. Some of my favorite moves are left jab, the cross and spinning back fist. I enjoy boxing also because my grandpa William Burley was a boxer for El Dorado, Arkansas. I box in my basement and I box in the day not every day though. I box with my punching bag and my boxing bag is strong! If you want to hear more about boxing you know who to talk to.

Drawing

The thing I am the best at drawing. All you need is a pencil, a piece of paper or a sketchbook, and a little bit of patience. If you have a lot of experience, it's pretty easy. I draw a lot of wolves so I'm best at drawing wolves or people. I've been drawing since I was 4 years old. I draw from my head. I usually start by drawing a bunch of circles. I usually keep my drawings in a notebook. Sometimes I end up losing my drawings if I don't have them in a notebook. I usually draw when I'm bored.

Basketball

I am good at basketball. I have a pretty good shot and am good at layups. I was really bad at basketball at first but practicing made me way better. IT TAKES PRACTICE!!! Here are some ways to get better: practice hard, listen to your coach, and PAY ATTENTION!!! If someone wanted to try basketball and they wanted me to show them how I would tell them to start practicing dribbling and layups and shooting, and lots of more things.

Hunting

One thing I'm good at is hunting. I love going hunting. I'd go every day if I could. I love hiking up mountains when we go hunting. Most of my friends are lazy so they won't hike that far up mountains. Last year my dad and I hiked up on a mountain and shot but missed a buck. He shot at it once. You need a gun and a knife to hunt. I mainly hunt deer, moose, ducks, and grouse. You need to be strong and believe you can do things. I wear boots, and camo gear. You need to be really quiet when you hunt. I sometimes use a deer call. I love deer hunting because it is something to do in the day instead of doing nothing, and it tastes really really good!

How to Make Survival Tools

I am good at making survival tools/weapons. My friend Tank and I always like to go into the woods. We would make weapons like bo staffs or spears. We would use one of his knives or one of mine. At Tank’s old house we made a treehouse with me, Tank, Brandon, and Tank’s older brother Fenntin. It took at least four to six hours to make. We also like to make wooden knives for no reason at all. I guess we make it so it's more like survival. Back to the treehouse. We hang out there a lot. We would sometimes bring snacks. Here's how to make a rock and stick hatchet. What you want to do is get a decently flat rock but not too flat. You also want to get a stick that is shaped like a hatchet handle. If the rocks aren't sharp. Grab a kind of big rock. Then grab your rock and some water. Pour some water on the bigger rock. Press the rock/axe head against the rock you poured the water on. A little bit at a time. Pour the water, sharpen the rock. Repeat. How you make a paracord axe grip is by grabbing some rope and tying the rope to the hatchet handle. You can cut brush, moss, branches and other things. This is my favorite thing to do because I like being creative.

Write an expository essay naming what you are good at and explaining in detail how you do it. If someone wanted to try to do what you can do, what would they need to know and how would they do it?

I am Good at Birding

One thing I am good at is birding. I share this passion by talking about birds all the time. I read books like Birds of North America to learn about as many birds as I can. I like birding by the water close to shrubs or woods. Most birds can be seen in areas like that.
I can tell what kind of bird it is by the sound, the looks, and the shape. If you hear a bird that sounds like this, “Cheat-cheat-cheat-cheater-cheater-cheater”, it is most likely a Song Sparrow. If you hear a sound that is a drill that slowly gets lower, it might be a Bald Eagle. If you hear a sound that sounds like someone mourning, or whaling, It is probably a Mourning Dove. If you see a bird with a red tail, hawk-like the body, and a brown back, it is most likely a Red-tailed Hawk. If you see a small yellow bird with a black cap, it is either a Goldfinch or a Wilson’s Warbler. I became good at bird watching by studying birds in the field and reading books about them. Would you agree that I am good at birding?

Cartwheel
I am good at cartwheeling because I practiced doing it a lot. Before doing a cartwheel you might want to stretch. How you actually do a cartwheel is you first take your stance in a star. Then you start tipping over while keeping your balance and one foot still on the ground. You will need to soon put one hand down then the next. You will need to let your foot go off the ground so then if you do it fast then you will kind of do a handstand for a split second. Then you put one foot down, then the other. Then you nailed it!
It takes a long time to learn a cartwheel so just be patient and maybe get help from somebody that knows how to do it because you might learn faster with a little bit of help. When you do a cartwheel you don’t want to do it in a small space unless you're really good at it because even I don't even do it in small spaces, and I'm good at doing cartwheels! Good Luck!

Breaststroke
Hi, today I am going to tell you what I am good at. I am good at breaststroke in swimming. Breaststroke is my favorite stroke! It is really fun to do. It reminds me of a frog swimming.
Breaststroke is pretty easy to do. You just put your arms in front of you and pull back. Well, you are doing that, you put your knees together. Then you put your legs in front of you. Next, you put your feet together. Just keep repeating those leg and arm motions and you're doing it. You have to breathe every stroke. You lift your head up as you bring your arms to your sides to breathe. You go kinda slow but that is normal. Breaststroke is a fairly slow stroke.
I can go pretty fast doing breaststroke. I also have a nice form when I am doing it. Breaststroke is my favorite stroke because you feel like a frog and just have fun. I learned breaststroke last year in the swim club. Ever since then I have loved it.

Drawing
I think I am really good at drawing. I really like drawing because it’s relaxing, independent, and really fun to draw different things. How you can get good at drawing is having someone teach you or just play around with all the stuff and make it your own. That’s how I learned. I could also probably teach someone too. There’s a lot of different blenders. There is also a lot of different pencils.
There is B1 pencils and a lot of numbers until about B7. Then it goes to BH pencils. Finally there are H1 pencils to about H8 or something. I can’t remember. The B’s have a lot of graphite that comes off of it. It is really dark. They are easy to work with if you need to smear or blend because it spreads sooo good. The H’s are really light and not dark. I think they are for when you want to draw outlines and then do it over in black pen or something. Then erase the pencil line. Then you can erase it really easily and it doesn’t show as much. Even if you push hard on the H pencils, they still don’t look any darker because they don’t break down as much as the B pencils. A blender blends the B pencils for spreading your drawing to make it look better. There is a clay eraser that erases charcoal. It’s really cool! You can also use a blender to spread the charcoal more so it’s not chunky.
I think I was born with the talent of drawing. I was good and then I just kept building on and drawing harder things. That’s how I learned. I was self-taught. I just look at a picture and then draw it. If you aren’t good at drawing that’s ok. If you want to become better here’s what you can do. You can start off by NOT pushing hard when you are drawing. If you do, it is a lot harder to erase. You can start practicing on the easy pictures. Once you get good at the easy ones, you can move on to harder pictures. Just keep practicing and you will get better. That is how I got so good. I think everyone should draw because it relaxes me so it might relax you or release stress. But if it frustrates you, then don’t do it. Drawing is the best!

What I'm Good At (Sort of)
I like a lot of things (even though I’m not good at them). The thing I like to do the most is cooking (like I said I like a lot of things I’m not good at). My grandma taught me how to cook when I was 8 years old and I’ve been hooked since! The first thing she taught me how to cook was a pancake and ever since then, I have loved cooking! Cooking for me is like drawing because you create, but this time you eat what you create..sometimes.The thing I like to cook the most is pancakes! I don’t know if this is weird (I do but I don’t wanna admit it) but when I cook pancakes I have to make the perfect circle or else I will not eat it for some reason. I know I’m weird don’t rub it in. Now that I have told you what I’m good at will I will tell you how I do what I’m good at (sort of).
The first thing I do is get my ingredients which are pancake batter, and milk…...look ok if you don’t like how I do it, do it yourself! Then after I get my ingredients I get what I also need which is a bowl, pan, spatulae, and a spoon. Once I have that I pour pancake batter into a bowl. Then after that, I pour the milk into the bowl as well. After that, I grab my spoon and stir the milk and the pancake batter until I get a lump-free sort of thick substance. Then I turn on the stove and wait till it gets hot enough. After the stove gets hot enough I put the pan on the stove and wait till the pan is hot enough. After the pan is hot enough I start pouring batches of pancake batter into the pan and make sure they’re in a perfect circle! The trick to cooking pancakes or my trick to cooking pancakes is waiting until I see bubbles in the middle of my pancake then that lets me know when it’s cooked on that side. Then I grab my spatulae and flip the pancake and do the same thing for the other side. That is what I’m good at, and how I do it!

Viola
One thing I think I’m good at is playing the viola. Here’s how you can start playing the viola/violin too!
First, you have to think about the most important thing. Do you have time to practice, at least 30 minutes a day? If not, you won’t be able to progress very far in playing your instrument. Next, you have to rent/buy an instrument. Figure out what size fits you best.
If you don’t have a teacher, you might not be able to go far. Having a teacher is very important for learning techniques, like posture, holding the bow, etc. You can learn from videos, e.g. Youtube, but if you do something wrong it might not be corrected and become a habit. If you have lessons with a teacher, they can correct your mistakes.
Next, you need a music book. All of the students in Wrangell use the Suzuki books. Without music to play, there isn’t a reason to have an instrument! That goes for all instruments.
The final point I want to make is that you need to practice every day. If you only practice, let’s say, once a week, you won’t be able to progress much, and you might have to relearn things you have already learned. So, practice every day.
That’s how to get started on the viola or violin.
P.S. There isn’t a way to be “good” from the start. The only method to progress is to practice, as mentioned.

Andrei: Brave Essay

One time I was brave:
I was in Juneau, at a swim meet in 2018.  I was with Nikolai and my friend Lucas Stearns.
When I walked up to the high dive, there was a queue of about eight to fifteen people in front of me. I waited my turn.
After waiting, I climbed up. I looked down (mistake) and I was a bit scared by how tall it was! I’m not scared of heights, I actually love getting a bird’s eye view, but if I tripped I would have fallen down (and probably broken many bones).
So I got up to the top, and I looked down. It was a 20 ft. drop to the water! So I bounced on it a little, contemplating getting down. Then. . .
I jumped.

Number the Stars
Annemarie’s experience with being brave:
A time Annemarie was brave was when she helped Ellen hide from the Nazis. When the Nazis were in the apartment, she wasn’t thinking about trying to save herself. She wasn’t thinking of the dangers at all. She was thinking of others. She helped Ellen break the clasp on her Star of David necklace. That action alone saved Ellen’s life.
Another time was when Annemarie was taking the packet to Uncle Henrik. If he probably hadn’t gotten the handkerchief, Ellen, her parents, and all the other Jews in the boat would have probably died, and Uncle Henrik would have probably been executed as a Resistance member
The similarities between the stories are that (at least to me) my part was pretty scary, but there was no going back. It was the same with Annemarie, except that what she was doing was so much more important!
The differences are that the acts that Annemarie performed have saved multiple lives, and made those people much, much happier. I haven’t saved any lives, to my knowledge.
I learned that being brave was.... not thinking of the dangers, only what you have to do.

Addy: A Time I was Brave

I was brave to keep on going during a swim meet in Petersburg even though I was tired, cold, and was in the last place. I beat my time by 41 seconds and got to go in the warm pool. It was a little kid pool so who knows what made it warm. I learned that even though there are downsides there are still upsides. I, in my opinion, got a good upside to my downside. I think that if I didn’t keep on going I wouldn’t have gotten this far. I think being brave doesn't have to be at all as chalked up as people make it seem.
I think Annemarie was brave when she took the package to Uncle Henrik. She was brave because the Nazis came and opened the package, broke the bread, and insulted her Mom. She was brave when she cried in front of the soldiers because they could of done what they did to kids in Germany and killed her!!!!!!! She cried out  “Don’t that´s my Uncle Henrik´s bread! My mother baked it” I think Annemarie was brave to have just not screamed her heart out because I sure would of.
Annemarie and I are similar in bravery because we both were persistent and had to do something we didn’t exactly want to do. She learned that no matter what you can do something. I learned “Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming” which is a quote from Dory.

Aadyn: The Time I was Brave

One of the time I was when brave was when I was at Camp Lorraine when I went on a raft behind a boat going fast. The raft was called the hotdog. It was one of the last days so they pumped up more floats. The only floaty we had before was a three-seat raft that I went on twice. Sydnie flipped off of it five times.
One time Annemarie was brave was when she was giving her uncle Henrik the package on the trail. She was also brave when it was dark on the trail and it was early. If she was stopped Mama told her to act like a silly little girl bringing her uncle his lunch. How Annmarie acted like a silly little girl was by thinking what Kristy would do. That was one time Annemarie was brave.
Our braveness is similar because we both risked our lives. Our braveness is different is that she is on land I’m on the water. This book taught me you have to be brave in that kind of situation in war.

Alana: Brave in the Cave

This is a time when I was brave. I was going to go into a cave underground filled with water. There were wasps all around it. I hate wasps! It was really deep, except for a couple parts of the cave.  It was almost like there were sections in the cave. There were parts that you had to go under the water to get to another part of the cave. At first, I was scared that there were going to be weird animals in the cave. There were not. I was still afraid of it.
It was really fun after I got used to the cold water. At the end of the cave, I didn't want to go back. I was having so much fun. The end of the cave was so small. There was barely enough room for all of us. Actually, I think there wasn't. It was like a tiny room.
Like Annemarie, I was brave. Annemarie was brave in many different ways. One time she was brave was when she left her mother to bring lunch ( the handkerchief ) to her uncle. She carried it in a basket. It had bread, cheese, apple, and a small package in it. She got stopped by soldiers on her way there. The dogs that were with the soldiers smelt the small package. They left after searching her basket. Then she gave it to her uncle.
Both times that we were brave were the same because we are both girls. We were also both in a place that was dark. They were also different because she was out of the water and I was in the water. She was also not in a cave and I was in a cave. The message of the book is to be kind and brave. I also learned in the book to create an ideal of human decency, such as being kind and caring.

Alexis: Brave

A time I was brave was when I shot my first deer. Just like Annemarie delivered handkerchief to Henrik . When I shot my buck. I was pretty scared. I bet Annmarie was scared to go in the woods all by herself. I was scared to shoot. When my dad gutted it was gross it stinks so bad. When I shot my gun I was shocked that I missed. I then loaded the gun again and it fell straight to the ground.
When Annemarie saw the soldiers she was probably so scared, but she brave just like me. Annemarie was brave because she walked in the woods all by herself. She also is brave because she was close by soldiers. She was brave when she walked in the woods. Surprised she didn't get caught.
When I was hiking up the mountain, my dad had to carry my deer up. We were so tired. I bet Annemarie was scared when she was running all the way to Uncle Henrik's boat to deliver a package all the way back. She was probably tired from running. I had to hike up a steep hill. I learned to be brave because sometimes you have to.

Brody: Brave

The time I had to be brave was when I was driving my go-kart in March of 2018. I was ready to drive the go-kart then I got really scared. I didn’t know if I was going to lose control because the steering wheel was really hard to turn. When I first drove my go-kart the steering wheel was VERY touchy. I also made a CRASH in the mud so it really hurt. I also had a hard time driving up Lower Salamander road and it was super sketchy going down!
Annemarie was brave when she went to go give Uncle Henrik the handkerchief and the Nazi soldier stopped Annemarie and took her stuff. Annemarie was brave enough to argue with the soldier and talk back.  Annemarie also told the soldier, “You are ruining my uncle’s lunch. She was brave in this part when the soldier was digging in her basket. She had a bunch of pride in herself to do these things that rarely happen.
Annemarie and I were similar because at first I did not know what to do but now I know how to drive my go-kart. Annemarie, she did not know what to do when she started to argue with the adult because she had pride. These are not similar because 1: I am not in the 40’s 2: I am not delivering food. 3: I am driving a go-kart and not walking. 4: I am not fighting with a solider. What I learned about being brave is do good things, not bad things.

Dakota: A Time I was Brave

I’m going to talk about a time that I was brave. A time I was brave was when I was in my old school in Anchorage. The school was called Inlet View. I had to go in front of the entire class and count to 100. I was super brave and did it, but I could only count to ten. Then they called me names. That is why I don’t like to speak in front of the class. The next day I counted to 100 my first try. I was the first one to count to one hundred.
I am going to talk about a time that Annemarie was brave. An example Annemarie was brave when she ran down the dark path and stood up to the soldiers. Another example was when the soldiers came into the apartment. Annemarie is the bravest in the book. She is the best in the book.
I am going to talk about a time I was brave and a time Annemarie was brave. A difference is people did not laugh at Annemarie when she was trying to be brave. Something that is the same as we both tried to be brave. What I learned in the book was that the Nazi soldiers bombed their own ships. I recommend this book to anyone how likes historical fiction.

Elena: Brave

One time I was brave was when I went on a plane all by myself. When I went on the plane I was nervous and excited at the same time. Well, I wasn't exactly all by myself. I was going on the plane to go to my camp. There other girls that were going to my camp. I made 3 new friends on the plane. They were Fyscher, Olivia, and JoJo, short for Josephine. I also made friends at my camp. The girls in my cabin were: Me, Fischer, Macy, Lily, Frankie, Winter, and Tabby (Tabitha).
One time when Annemarie was brave, was when she had to go through the woods to deliver the handkerchief to Uncle Henrik. She had to do this because it was very important. A quote to prove this is: “ ‘it is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything. We only know what we need to know.’’ That is why Uncle Henrik didn't tell her everything. That means to be brave, it is better to not know everything.
The similarities are: we were both brave, we were both going somewhere. The differences are: I was going to a camp, she wasn't, hers was a very important thing, mine wasn't. I learned that being brave means thinking about the important stuff.

Greggy: Brave Essay

One day, me and my family were at Nemo hill. Me and my sister Amber were riding bikes. She dared me to ride from the top of Nemo hill to the bottom of Nemo hill. Then Amber went to the bathroom. I went to the top of Nemo hill. Amber got out of the bathroom. I started to go down the hill, then halfway down I crashed. My sister came and saw that I crashed.
When I rode my bike down the hill is when I was like when Annmarie ran through the forest to Uncle Henrik. I think she was scared when she ran into the Nazi soldiers. I think she was as scared as me when I went down the hill. That was a scary day for me. I’ll never do that again.
After I crashed I had to ride my bike the rest of the way down. When I got there, my mom wiped the blood off my cuts. Luckily, we had bandages with us. Then Amber told me she meant to ride my bike from the middle of the hill. Then I told her that she pointed to the top of the hill.
Annemarie is brave in about 4 ways. Annemarie ran through the dark forest at night. Annemarie was brave when she ran into the Naze soldiers. She was also brave when she saw soldiers walking toward them. Annemarie was brave when the soldiers walked into Ellen's house.

Hailey: Brave Essay

One day it was really hot. I wanted to jump off the dock with my friends. I got used to the water from the low dock. Later, I went to the high dock. I was a little nervous to jump off because it was a long swim back to the ladder and the current was ripping hard. I also didn’t want to jump because the water was also freezing cold. I finally jumped and it was really fun! I think that was my third or second time jumping off the high dock.
A time Annmarie was brave was when she had to bring Uncle Henrick a handkerchief and food in a basket. On the way to Uncle Henrick, Annmarie got stopped by soldiers with dogs. Annmarie was really good at not giving away anything that she wasn’t supposed to. She was brave because those soldiers could of killed her but they didn’t.
The two stories are a lot alike and a lot different. I learned how different and alike they are. The way the two stories are similar is we both are girls and we both had to make a decision. They both are different because her story had a dog in it, mine didn’t. My story involved water, hers didn’t, and my story didn’t have any soldiers, hers did. The two stories are a lot alike and a lot different. I learned how different and alike they are. I learned that, if you think about it, we were both really brave. I also learned about human decency. To be friendly and make the world a better place.

Hannah: The First Time I went on an Airplane

A time I was brave is when I first flew on an airplane when I was 9 years old! I was very nervous because I never flew on an airplane before. I was also nervous because I  thought we were going to crash. I mostly was scared because of how high and how long we were on the airplane to get to Jamaica. It was very fun, well except for when you start to land and your ears ring. The airplane was quite nice!
The people there were so nice. I got a coke and a sprite. Also, the seats were nice. The best thing about me is the fact that I sleep everywhere, so as you can imagine me, my mom, and my grandma almost slept through the whole flight. When we landed I felt actually pretty good. I learned that if I’m scared just sleep, also to think of James Charles. That was a time I was brave.
A time Annemarie was brave is when she went through the woods to get the packet to Uncle Henrik. I think that was very brave because she risked her life to get the packet to Uncle Henrik. Also, she was brave because Nazi soldiers stopped her. She knew what to do. She acted like a silly dimwitted girl and managed to get the packet to Uncle Henrik. That’s pretty brave if you ask me. That’s a time Annemarie was brave.
Me being brave is not as awesome as Annemarie being brave but we both did something that we were scared to do. Just like Annemarie, I was very nervous but for different reasons. While Annemarie learned that the Rosen’s had pride. I learned to sleep when I’m scared. Also, Annemarie ran through the woods while I had to be high up in the air. Annemarie was brave and so was. Also from Number the Stars, I learned no matter how hard things maybe don’t give up.

Jackson: New School

One time I was brave was when I went to a new school. I was scared, but I did it because I was brave. I had to join in the middle of third grade. I had a teacher named Mrs. Miller. Her class was nice. She was a good teacher. I had to do this thing called AM and AR. I didn’t like it. I was always behind, and they expected me to know things I didn’t learn in my other classes.
Annemarie was brave when she went through the woods. She risked her life. She had to deliver a packet to the Rosens, so they could escape to Sweden. She had to bring a handkerchief covered with rabbits’ blood and cocaine, to numb the dogs’ noses, so they could not smell the Rosens. Fishermen would make secret compartments to hide the Jews.
We had some similar connections and differences. The connection was that we were both brave and we had to do something we were scared to do. The differences were that my situation was not life-threatening, and hers was. For my situation, it took place in 2017, and was in Alaska. For Annemarie, the time she was brave took place in 1943, and was in Denmark. What I learned from being brave is that even if it is hard, you can accomplish it, and not be afraid.

Jamie: Being Brave

I was brave when I was at Wild Waves in Tacoma. Me and my grandpa were going on a roller coaster and  it was wooden. My grandpa said it is not that scary so I went on. It started moving then it hit that drop and I freaked. I was screaming. It went 85 miles per hour  and it was 80 feet in the air. I looked down and it was really scary. I could not look down any more. When it was time to get off I got off, I did not want to get on ever again. I was so dizzy. My grandpa begged me to get on  again so I did it again and it was not so scary.
Annemarie was brave when she went into the woods at night by herself  to deliver the package to Uncle Henrik. The searching dogs showed up, but  the package had cocaine and rabbits blood to block out the dogs nose so they  are not suspicious. (And they can get away.)
I learn  being brave was to try new things. This  brave story is different because I am on a  roller coster and Annemarie is in the woods. It is kind of is because the roller coaster is by the woods. I learned being brave to try  new things even know it can be scary.

Kasey: Seven Sacred Pools

In Hawaii we went on the longest ride in the world well that's what it felt like the ride to the 7 sacred pools took about seven hours.  We finally got there, but we were so hot that we had to put on sunscreen, shorts, tank tops, and slides. We also had to hike down a big hill to get to the 7 Sacred Pools.  When we finally got to the pools, the first thing we did was jump off a little cliff it was about 20 feet in the air. When I got up there I didn't want to jump at first so I got down.  Then Ethan tried he was scared too, so I went up and jumped off.
A time when Annmarie was brave was when she was walking through the forest and the Nazis stopped her.  She didn't panic and run away, even when they went through her bag. Because of her calmness, Kirsti didn’t freak out either.  They didn’t find anything suspicious in their bag so they let them go. Then when they walked away they brought the rag to Uncle Henrik.

My connection is how I showed Ethan how to be brave and how Annemarie showed Kirsti how to be brave also. When Annemarie was brave it was much more dangerous then when I was brave.  I learned that it doesn’t matter what age you are you can still be brave.

Everett: Brave Essay

One experience when I was brave was when I jumped off the high dock when it was so high. The tide was low so the dock went high up. It didn’t look high but when I got up there it was super high. My friends were there so I just jumped. I kept jumping after I did it two times.
A time Annemarie was was brave was when she had to take the dark path. She got stopped by the German soldiers on the way. The German soldiers were ruining her uncle’s lunch. The dogs snarled at her. Also when she had Ellen’s Star Of David necklace in her hand trying to hide it.
I think our experience is the same is I did not want to jump off the dock when my friends told me. Also, I bet Annemarie did not want to take the dark path either.
Our experiences are different because she was on land at the dark. I was in the water when it was day time. What I learned about being brave is don’t think about it, just do it!!!

Jackson: Brave Essay

One time I was brave was the first time I drove a boat. I was five. I was at Mill Creek, when my dad decided to let me try to drive the boat. We pointed the boat at the airport and took off. I started out slow. My dad told me to give it a little gas and I accidentally gunned it. We started going way too fast toward the airport! I started screaming that I wanted to stop. My dad had to take the wheel and slow us down.
One time Annemarie was brave was when the soldiers with the dogs stopped her. She was walking down the path to the dock, when the dogs smelled the handkerchief. The soldiers fed Uncle Henrik's bread to the dogs. They also almost fed the cheese to the dogs too. Then one of the soldiers saw the handkerchief. They threw it on the ground along with an apple. Then they left. Annemarie picked up her stuff and ran to Uncle Henrik’s boat.

Somethings that were similar about our experiences is that they both happened on or close to the ocean. Somethings that were different was that her experience included dogs, mine did not. I learned that being brave is not being scared, but just doing it.

Madelyn: Jumping off a Bridge

A time I was brave was just this summer! I was staying with Ms. Jenna Turner in Petersburg. My mom was at a teaching conference. It was sunny out so we went to Blind Slew in Petersburg  We went with my friend Tory. She was a few years older than me. We kayaked and paddle boarded. At Blind Slew, there is a bridge. It is about 15-20 feet high! Tory had said something about jumping off the bridge. Finally, I agreed to, but Tory had to as well. When we got up there, about five to six girls were jumping already. I felt like I was 100 feet high! It was really scary, but I had made a promise to Tory. I finally did it! I jumped! I jumped backward though because it helped with not being scared. I closed my eyes the whole way down because I was so scared! In the end, I ended up doing it one more time.
Annemarie was brave when she brought the cocaine/rabbits blood handkerchief to Uncle Henrik. Annemarie was also very brave when she got stopped by the soldiers, lied, and doesn't even get caught! She even saves six people's lives in the process. She saved: the Rosens’ lives and the three strangers' lives as well. If I was Annemarie I wouldn’t be that brave.
Two ways Annemarie being brave is similar to me being brave are: one, we both were not sure about being brave and two, we were both by water. Two ways Annemarie’s experience was different from mine at being brave are: one, it was a different time period and two, I was with a friend when I was brave. I learned that to be brave you can’t know everything.

Natalia: Number the Stars Brave

I was brave when I was going to do the box maze with my friends last Halloween. When we were in the line, I was so scared because it was going to be pitch black! When we entered the maze, It was really dark, but Sydnie was in front of me, and Addy was behind me. We always felt for each other. Then we got lost! I was horrified, but somebody came with a flashlight. It was actually really fun and I have no idea why I was so scared!
One time Annemarie was brave when she was walking down the dark path with the basket afraid to get caught by soldiers. Soon she could no longer see the barnhouse, so she started to run. Annemarie was not used to going down this path in the dark. Then she was so close to the harbor, she heard a harsh, “HALTE!” Annemarie started to get really scared because she just got caught by soldiers!
I think our experiences are similar. Annemarie was running down the DARK path and we were going through a pitch-black pathway in boxes. Also, I got really scared when we got lost, and Annemarie got really scared when she got stopped. I think our experiences are different too, I was in a box maze, we didn’t get stopped by soldiers, and we were not risking our lives by going inside of a box maze. What I learned about being brave is, being brave isn’t easy and that you need to be scared to be brave.

Sawyer: A Time I was Brave

A time I was brave like Annemarie was when I shot my first deer. I was scared because I never shot a gun that big. Annmarie was scared when she ran through the woods to deliver a package. I would never run through the woods when I knew there were a lot of soldiers out. I had to shoot the gun twice because I missed the first shoot. It really made my shoulder hurt.
A time Annmarie was brave was when she ran through the forest. She was delivering a package. She was really scared because she knew there were soldiers out. She was delivering the package to Uncle Henrik. It was in a small envelope.
I was brave when I shot a big gun. Annmarie was brave when she ran through the woods. We were the same because we were both scared. We were different because I shoot a gun, and she ran through the forest. I learned that they used handkerchiefs during the war so the soldier dogs can’t find the Jews on the boats. I learned that the Nazis used a lot of bombs. I learned that being brave in life can help you.

Sophia: Brave

One time I was brave was when I was in Thailand. In Thailand, elephants are really popular. Trust me, they have painting elephants, they do elephant sports, elephant riding, elephant dancing, and many more! My and my cousin from Thailand was going to see the elephants play soccer and basketball. Also, there were elephants dressed up and sort of dancing. After they got to pick you up if you wanted. I didn’t know if I wanted to or not, but I ended up doing it anyway. They were getting ready to go and most of the people were gone so I decided to go. My mom told me to just stand there so I did. The elephant just picked me up! I was not ready for that at all and I was really scared when it happened! I was so scared, but I’m happy I did it because it ended up being sort of fun!
One time Annemarie was brave, was when she ran quickly through the forest to give her Uncle Henrick the packet! She was trying to deliver a packet to Uncle Henrick, but some soldiers stopped her! They took all of Uncle Henrick’s “lunch.” Then when they were looking through the basket, they found the paket! Inside they asked what it was and why it was so carefully hidden. Annemarie didn’t know what was in the packet so she started to worry. The soldier opened the packet and there was a handkerchief inside. It was special because it had rabbits blood and cocaine. The rabbits blood attracted the soldiers dogs but the cocaine numbed the dogs nose. The fishermen used this to make sure the soldiers didn’t figure out about the hidden Jews in the boat.
