Sydnie: When I was Brave

One time I was brave was when I was at Camp Lorraine and we went tubing. I don't think I was brave to go tubing. I think it was brave that I flipped off the raft! I flipped off 4 or 5 times. The only people who really wanted to flip were me and a kid from Petersburg named Tucker.  Aadyn flipped off once on a raft called the hotdog. The reason I think this was brave is because we almost got whiplash. I personally don't know what it looks like but Aadyn said it looks like we were doing cartwheels on the water. It sounds cool. What it felt like I was gliding on the water. Camp Lorraine was so much fun my favorite part was water sports. It was more than half of the campers favorite class. It also felt like I was getting ripped apart by the water.
One time Annemarie was brave was when she brought the handkerchief to her uncle Henrik. This was brave because she was stopped by the soldiers and stood up to them on the dark path. It was very brave of Annemarie because she knew that this path would probably be dangerous, yet she did it anyway. Annemarie was only thinking of what Kirsti would do. Annemarie got the package to her uncle.  Her uncle told her she was very brave for doing that and now she needed to get back to mama and help her.
One way these acts are similar are because the thing we did was dangerous yet we did it anyway. In my case I could’ve gotten whiplash and that could've knocked the wind out of me and I would’ve drowned and died. In Annemarie's case the soldiers could have executed her.  Her uncle could have never gotten the handkerchief and he probably would have died too. Ways that these things are different are I had a choice to do something and it was not life or death. Annemarie had a choice but her uncle or the Jews all could have died. My choice was to do something fun or not. Annemarie’s choice was not for fun or games.Something that I learned is that if you are not brave you might miss out on something fun or exciting!!!

Kindness

Please check out the writing done by the students at Evergreen Elementary School in the Wrangell Sentinel (click the link below).

The fifth-grade students wrote about kindness. Their writing prompt was: If you could do one kind thing to anyone what would it be?

Photosynthesis

You are a plant! Introduce yourself and describe what kind of plant you are and where you live.  Now tell us all about your special power, the ability to make your own food.

Hi, my name is Mombo. I am a piece of red moss. I live on the Rainbow Falls high trail. I was told to tell you how photosynthesis worked. Here goes nothing. It had been dark for days. I had started to get jealous of Sammy the sundune and all his friends when the sun came out! If I could leap for joy I would have! Instantly, the process started. My chlorophyll’s started collecting up the sunlight energy. Then I soaked up some of the freshest carbon dioxide coming from these strange animals with strange clothes, and guess what, they walked on two legs. My roots started to soak up water straight from the Rainbow Falls. Then out of nowhere, I suddenly created glucose, which I stored in my leaves, stem, and seeds. In this process, I had absorbed the hydreigon in the h20, and all the 0, in h20 went right back out into the world. So, now that you know how plants photosynthesise, go out in the world and study some of us. Oh, and if you liked this writing, find me at the fork in the  Rainbow Falls High trail, one inch away from Sammy the sundune (who I still get jealous from time to time).

I am a raspberry bush, I have a special power, I can make my own food, I live in Wrangell, AK it is cold out right now and I live in a backyard. Naw I will tell you how my powers work. First, sunlight provides me energy it hits my chloroplast. I also take in carbon dioxide from the air, my chlorophyll absorbs energy from sunlight. Which causes carbon dioxide and water to combine a mixture of making glucose. After I make glucose I release o2/oxygen into the air with my stomata. I store my energy from the sun in my leaves, stems, and roots, so this is how my special power works. Thanks for reading!

Hello in a raspberry plant! I’m going to talk about me/photosynthesis. Also how I help others! As you know, many people can eat raspberries! I make my own food using energy from the sun.I make food for you and food for me! After making food my leaves release oxygen so you guys can breathe! I’m going to talk about my special power! My ability to make food/sugar! Like many other plants, I use the energy from the sun to make sugar. I basically take in carbon dioxide and let out oxygen. Let’s talk about interesting facts about me! One, I can be all types of colors. For example red, black, purple, and golden yellow! Two, there are some raspberries “golden/yellow raspberries” that are smaller than regular raspberries! Three, raw raspberries are 86 percent water! Lastly, I can be found all over the world! I am a very common fruit. I can be found in the U.S, Russia, Poland, and more! I hope you learned more about me/raspberries! Byeee!

Hello, I am a cactus. I live in a house in a pot. My owner waters me. Rain can not get to me in my small pot. How sunlight gets to me is, when the window is open I can get to the sunlight. I can take in all the carbon dioxide I want, because I live inside a house, although there are many other plants too. My favorite food is, glucose, made by the sun’s energy, water, and carbon dioxide. After I make my dinner. (glucose) I release oxygen for my humans through my stomata. My food is stored in my leaves, just like people’s pantries, but they can also be stored in my stem, seeds, and sometimes in roots. Hi! I am a White Bog-Orchid! I live in wet boggy areas. I get up to 11-130 centimeters tall. My roots are thick and fleshy. My flowers are white but sometimes green. They are sweet scented. My tuberlike roots can be eaten raw or cooked.

I have a special power. Can you guess what it is? Photosynthesis!!! I have the ability to make my own food! I have a cycle to make my food and other things. I will tell you how it works. First, I get my energy from the sun to help me make my food. Did you know I provide clean oxygen for you weird people? You breathe out the carbon dioxide and that is what I like. My leaves take it in and then turn it into clean oxygen (from my stomata) for you to breathe again! Chlorophyll (that’s what makes me green) absorbs energy from the sunlight. I need this energy. I also need carbon dioxide and water to make my food. The food that I make is stored up in my leaves, stems, seeds, and - in some plants - their roots. My roots take in good water, which I need to use my special power. (Photosynthesis) That is all I have to say about my awesome power! Bye!!!!!

By: Madelyn
Hi my name is Madelyn. Today I am going to tell you about my Niagara Falls trip. I did this activity this summer. It was amazing! We went with one of my Mom's friend Jessica! I have gone there twice now!
It was pretty weird how we got there! We were just sitting on a bench, there was a bridge right by us. My mom asked what was on the other side of the bridge. Jessica told her that Niagara Falls was over there.
My mom decided we should go. Jessica drove us to the falls! The drive there was about two hours! When we got there it was so CRAZY! So many people were there! We didn't go over to the American side at all. We stayed on the Canadians side the whole time.
After the falls we ate at this place called the Rainforest Cafe. I had sliders with fruit and chocolate milk. There was an arcade in it. It was really cool! I played the candy claw and a few other games.
Then we went to a gift shop by the cafe. Quinn got a Niagara Falls shirt. I got a little mug that said Niagara Falls and a shirt! The car ride home was really short. It was about 45-50 minutes. I had so much fun at Niagara Falls!

Why I Love Traveling as my Favorite Summer Activity
By: Hannah
My name is Hannah,my favorite summer activity is...drum roll please, traveling! I love to travel a lot.I love how you can see the word from a whole different perspective. Another reason why I love to travel is to taste different foods for example when I went to Jamaica I tried Jerk chicken also i tried a raw coconut.
Another reason why I love travel is I love how confused you get when you start to learn more about their culture. For example in Jamaica they always have a beach party and its so fun, but the other thing I was confused about is they didn’t have sharks...that’s weird but then again you don’t go out on the beach and see a shark wearing a bikini walking on the beach.
Another reason I love to travel is folktales, I love hearing stories by a warm fire. One folktale is from Jamaica and its called Ol’ Hige she is an evil spirit that is a witch and flies at night and sucks the breathe, from sleeping people. My favorite folktale is about a water spirit called River Mumma she protects the rivers and water in Jamaica.
Another one of the main reasons I like to travel is seeing new things with my family. Its so fun to be with my family and experience something we never have. But here is the main reason I love to travel, the main reason I love to travel is the plane. I know, I know some people might say “I hate being on the plane it so uncomfortable”.The plane can be uncomfortable, but the view is worth it all to see the clouds, the water, and the mountains. That is what truly amazing and breathtaking. That is why traveling is my favorite summer activity.

Spider Beach
By: Hailey
My favorite thing I did this summer was go to Spider Beach. We went there to get driftwood that I could paint on. I went with Jenna, Michael, Dustin, and my mom. We left the beach to watch Scotty pull up his fishing net. After a while, this massive, beautiful cruise ship went by and the waves were huge. We followed it and the people on it waved to us and we waved back. The ship was called Star Princess. We only went to Spider Beach once. It was my favorite because it was fun and cool!

Cutting Moose Trails
By: Everett
My favorite thing I did this summer was to cut moose trails with my dad up the river. I got to follow behind him with his rifle while he cut the trail. We cut three trails about a half mile long. We sat down and ate sandwiches for a minute.
After that, we went trout fishing. We didn’t catch anything because the river was too high. Up on a hill, there was a huge mama bear and two cubs. After that, we went to go cut a tree that fell in the middle of the trail. After that we went home. I was soaked on the way back. It was rough and it was raining hard so when the rain hit my face, is felt like glass hitting my face.
I did this activity with my dad. This was my first time doing this. This was my favorite activity because I got to have fun and spend time with my dad.

Zarembo
By: Alexis
Last month I went to Zarembo for three days. First thing we did was go get the jeep running so we could go hunting. We got the jeep running and we went out hunting. When we were driving we seen a grouse and I got out the 2\23 and shot the grouse. Then we went back out hunting after a while we went back to the boat and me and sawyer plucked the grouse. Then my dad cooked it for us. When it was done,we ate the grouse. It was a little chewy, but it was good. Then it was time to go to sleep. The next morning we were in the car and we stopped to look in the clear cut and my dad saw a buck. he went to get us and we walked soI could shoot it. So I got in a good position and shot at the deer and I missed the first shot but I reloaded the gun and shot it again and fell to the ground. Then we had to hike down to gut it. Then my dad had to pack it all the way up then we went back to the boat. I had a good trip at Zarembo.

Grand Canyon
By: Alana
I went to the Grand Canyon this summer in July. We went on the trail that led to the lookout. We got to see the whole canyon. It was so deep. If you fell off the edge you would die. This activity was my favorite because it was really deep and big!!

Zarembo
By: Sawyer
Last month me, Alexis, and her dad went to Zarembo. We stayed three nights. The first night Alexis got a grouse. She hit it in the wrong spot so it ruined a lot of the meat. The next day we saw a grouse, but we did not get to shoot it. My favorite part was the next day when Alexis shot her first deer. It was a two point. That night we ate the grouse, But it was really chewy. There was a bunch of people there. In total we probably saw at least 100 something deer.

This Summer we went to Florida!
By: Andrei
We started our trip on June 8th, and had an 8 hour flight in total. We got on in Wrangell, stopped at Seattle, and went straight to the Orlando Airport. There were 10 stories of apartments, inside the airport! We got outside, and the first breath was.....! The most humid breath you’ll ever have. It felt like breathing straight water droplets. But, contrary to everything we’ve heard about Florida, the taxi driver was not an alligator. Nor did we see any alligators on the entire trip.
We drove out of Orlando to a “small” town called Clermont. It had the biggest pool I’ve ever seen.
And it was completely outside too!
So 5 days just fly past , we were doing a swim camp with Nick Thoman and Emma Reaney. They were both in the Olympics! And Nick had a golden medal from there too! The hotel was also very nice.
Then we get on the white winged cylinder to move very fast back home. Mist was flowing out of the air vents (they were cooling the plane down) like in a horror movie! We fly to San Francisco, stop there, but stay in the plane, and fly back to Seattle, stay there from 12 a.m. to 3 a.m., and buy McDonalds at 2:12 in the morning, sleep for a few minutes, and then we got back to Wrangell on June 15th.
Overall, it was a great trip, but I wouldn’t do it again soon because the plane trip is boring.
